Benefits of Installing Solar with Battery Backup in Georgia
Firefly Solar recently completed a rooftop installation of solar with battery backup in Hartwell, Georgia. The system includes a 12.4 kW DC solar array and a Tesla Powerwall 3 for whole-home battery backup, making it one of the most comprehensive residential energy upgrades in Hart County this year.
Many have experienced rising energy costs and increasing weather-related outages across the Southeast. As a result, this project reflects a growing shift in how Georgia homeowners think about resilience, independence, and smart energy investments.
Project Overview: Why Choose Solar With Battery Backup
Our client’s decision to install a solar + storage system was driven by three key motivations.
- Offsetting electricity bills while locking in long-term savings
- Protecting against outages from Hart EMC grid disruptions
- Increasing the home’s value with a renewable upgrade and battery storage system
Working closely with Firefly’s project management and design team, the client opted for a system layout that would maximize solar production across all usable roof space. Indeed, this install was paired with modern backup infrastructure to ensure uninterrupted power during utility failures. Consequently, this solar panel system is ready for just about anything.

Solar + Storage System Design and Installation Details
System Configuration
- Panel Count: 31 Hyperion Solar HY-DH108P8 400W(B) modules
- Array Size: 12.4 kW (STC), 11.65 kW (PTC)
- Inverter: Tesla Powerwall 3, 11.5 kW AC output
- Battery Storage: Tesla Powerwall 3 (13.5 kWh usable capacity)
- Racking: IronRidge XR-10, mounted with Unirac FlashLoc COMP attachments
- Orientation: Four roof-facing arrays at 90°, 180°, 270° azimuths
- Pitch: 12:12 across all roof planes
- Rapid Shutdown & Safety: Fully compliant with NEC 690.12 and 690.13
Electrical Integration of Solar With Battery Backup
The system connects via a Tesla Backup Gateway 2, installed with a 200A subfeed to the home’s existing 200A main service panel—no upgrade required. The installation includes all necessary AC/DC disconnects, signage, and rapid shutdown switches per 2017 NEC and Hart County AHJ standards.

Performance and Customer Benefit
This comprehensive solar panel system with battery backup was engineered to capture maximum production throughout the day. Moreover, the multi-azimuth configuration allows early morning, peak midday, and late-afternoon solar harvesting. Finally, coupled with a high-efficiency Tesla inverter and whole-home battery, this solar + storage system delivers.
- Consistent energy offset that will significantly reduce utility bills year-round
- Instantaneous backup power during outages, covering essential and high-priority circuits
- Ongoing monitoring and app control via Tesla’s mobile platform
This project is a great example of what’s possible when a homeowner prioritizes both energy production and backup protection. Unquestionably, this solar panel system was designed with precision and long-term performance in mind. Simply put, it’s ready for whatever the grid (or the weather) throws at it.

The installation required zero compromise to the roof structure, with 76 flashing-integrated attachments spread across 651 square feet. In addition, structural loads were calculated to maintain well below allowable limits. Undoubtedly, this ensures code compliance and long-term durability.
Solar + Battery Trends in Hartwell and the Southeast
This solar installation project reflects a larger trend we’re seeing across Georgia and the Carolinas. For example, homeowners are no longer satisfied with just “net metering.” They want control. And control means battery backup.
homeowners are no longer satisfied with just “net metering.” They want control. And control means battery backup.
We’ve seen the increasing instability of power utilities and growing incentives for clean energy. Due to this, homes with Tesla Powerwall are becoming the new standard for future-forward home infrastructure. In fact, we’re noticing this trend particularly in rural and edge-grid areas like Hartwell.
Can you install solar with battery backup in Georgia?
Yes! And Hart EMC supports net metering for solar customers with battery storage.
Do I need to upgrade my main panel to install a Tesla Powerwall?
Not always. For instance, this install leveraged a pre-existing 200A panel and used subfeed integration.
What’s the best roof type for solar?
Solar panel installs with battery backup are well suited to a large variety of rooftops. Albeit, asphalt shingle roofs like this one are ideal. Further, this is especially the case when paired with modern mounting hardware like Unirac FlashLoc and IronRidge XR-10.
